Reflexology

Reflexology is
one of the oldest natural therapies dating back to 2330BC from ancient Egypt
. There are wall paintings taken from the Pyramid of Ankhmahor. This
Pyramid was known as the “Physicians Tomb” due to the fact that there were
lots of medically related paintings found inside. The hieroglyphics on the
painting translate to: “Don’t hurt me”, says the patient, “I shall act so
you praise me”, replies the practitioner.
In the early
1900s, Dr William Fitzgerald, an ear, nose and throat specialist, was
responsible for mapping 10 longitudinal zones on the body. He found that
pressure applied to the body could have effects of anaesthesia on different
body parts.
Eunice Ingham,
a physiotherapist in the 1930s, developed this Zone Therapy of William
Fitzgeralds and invented the word Reflexology. Known as the “Mother of
Reflexology”, her technique is generally what we know of reflexology today.
Reflexology is
an ancient art and works on the principles of using pressure applied to the
feet (or the hands) to clear energy blockages in the body. Different
pressure points on the feet correspond to different systems within the human
body, thus promoting the body to heal itself in any weak areas. Reflexology
treats the body as a whole and this allows all manner of symptoms, causes
and problems to be healed.
After a
treatment clients often feel very relaxed and calm. On some occasions a
client might experience something known as a Healing Crisis where their
symptoms appear to get slightly worse. This does not always happen and
usually the symptoms are relieved after a day or so. A Healing Crisis is
the body reacting and working to remove toxins. Plenty of water should be
consumed in this instance to help the body flush out these toxins.
